A teacher with strong pedagogical knowledge employs
effective teaching
strategies, creates well - designed lessons plans, applies successful
classroom management techniques, and develops an understanding
about student learning (Koehler & Mishra, 2008).
The
effective teacher performs many functions that can be organized into three major roles: (1) making wise choices
about the most
effective instruction
strategies to employ, (2) designing
classroom curriculum to facilitate student learning, and (3) making
effective use of
classroom management techniques (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001).
Teachers» reasons for their decisions
about classroom instruction closely related to their conceptions of science,
effective science teaching and instructional
strategies, purposes of science teaching, and student understanding.
This collection of papers was written to address two purposes: (a) to provide teachers in preservice LD preparation programs with an overview of validated practices that have been proven
effective for children with language learning disabilities, and (b) to provide regular education teachers preparing to enter the field or already in the
classroom with knowledge
about validated teaching
strategies so that they can work more effectively in collaboration with an LD consultant.
Drawing on her vast knowledge and experience as a
classroom teacher, she covers the basics of
effective mathematical communication and offers specific
strategies for teaching students how to speak and write
about math.
Because teachers say it is difficult to stay current on research
about effective instruction, this paper helps teachers become consumers of educational programs and materials, provides guidance on how to recognize scientifically based instructional
strategies, how to use the concepts of research in the
classroom.
For example, the clips could be used by principal training programs and universities as a
classroom discussion tool; by principal mentors or staff developers to generate discussion
about strategies to improve teacher performance and student outcomes; and by superintendents to develop school improvement plans or to model
effective practice as instructional leaders.
No instructional
strategy can compensate for a teacher who lacks proficiency in his content area, is unclear
about learning goals, plans an unfocused activity, or does not possess the leadership and management skills to orchestrate
effective classroom functioning.
We hope that this new PDI, using a unique blended learning approach, will encourage participants to not only learn
about student engagement issues but also to collaborate with one another as they try to determine the best
strategies to implement in their
classrooms and ultimately become more
effective educators.
