In North America, birth interventions, such as
epidurals and Pitocin, are ver

Although most women
in the U.S. use pregnancy
epidurals (and / or spinal
epidurals) to relieve the pain of childbirth, myths
about pregnancy
epidural procedures abound.
In childbirth class or hospital classes, you may learn a lot
about epidural anesthesia.
How
about a woman who decides to get an
epidural after 10 + agonizing hours — would she have come through the experience trauma free if only she had continued to be
in excruciating pain for another several hours?
You might even see the procedure or talk to an anesthesiologist
about the procedure, but chances are the information you receive
in class will end when the
epidural is placed or shortly thereafter.

And then I wound up begging for an
epidural, grateful for the rest it gave me and the fuzzy headedness that kept me from panicking when everyone
in the room got very quiet and serious
about the signs of distress from the babe my belly.
In one Australian survey,
about half of first - time mothers who were administered both an
epidural and Pitocin had an operative delivery.30
An
epidural gives inadequate pain relief for 10 to 15 percent of women, 55 and the
epidural catheter needs to be reinserted

On the other hand, if you want the option of getting an
epidural, or you're very anxious
about something going wrong during labor and delivery and don't want to chance having to transfer to a hospital, you'll want to be
in a hospital from the get - go.

With the second child, I did have an
epidural, but I was on the verge of saying I didn't want it after all, because I seemed to be handling the contractions well, having read a lot

epidural because my provider pressured me, I was not allowed to labor at home, or I didn't get to relax
in a whirlpool.
I have heard first - hand stories of women being denied
epidurals, lied to
about the effects of
epidural analgesia, and not being provided with proper informed consent
about the risks of going to 42 weeks at her 41 week appointment (as
in, the mother wasn't told anything that was
in the College of Midwives» sample consent document
about increased risk of stillbirth).

I agree, of course,
about violent interventions, but one hopes you would also be as concerned and vocal
about other forms of violence towards birthing women such as
epidural denial and forced rooming
in.
Some of the astonishing statistics include, a 50 % reduction
in use of pain medication,
about a 30 % faster than average first stage of labor, and a significant reduction
in the use of an
epidural, forceps, vacuum extraction, an episiotomy, and likelihood of a surgical birth.
I'm talking
about babies pointing out their tush and one foot
in a super uncomfortable awkward position, as if giving birth and dealing with
epidurals, dilation, and contractions wasn't enough for mom.

In 2012, the National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health published the results of a study finding that women who received continuous labor support were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication,
epidurals, negative feelings
about childbirth, vacuum or forceps - assisted births, and C - sections.
In my case, having an
epidural stopped the «cascade of interventions» that you talk
about.
My blood pressure was dangerously high and my OB was talking
about c - section when my awesome doula mentioned that she has known women
in the past who used the blood pressure drop associated with
epidurals in their favor to help bring it down when it was too high.
