This is perhaps what most people think of when they think
about high intensity cardio (or high intensity interval training — HIIT).
Not exact matches
This is not to say that bodybuilders don't care
about developing greater strength, but their top priority is muscle growth and becoming as lean as possible with the help of
high intensity cardio and by optimizing nutrition and supplementation, so it's safe to say that the typical bodybuilder is devoted to transforming his body into the ideal, maximally developed representation of human muscularity.
HIIT (
high -
intensity interval training) has been the most buzzed -
about sweat method for a while, but there's a new approach gaining momentum: LISS, or low -
intensity, steady - state
cardio.
Besides the new form of
cardio called
High Intensity Interval training (alternating sprints and jogs) which I talked
about in another post, there's another form of
cardio that is also a great alternative to long, boring
cardio which makes use of your own bodyweight.
It's not just
about lifting weights or
high intensity cardio anymore.
In terms of exercise, something people are always talking
about now is
high -
intensity interval training and there has been a push against lower -
intensity cardio.
A
high -
intensity cardio of equal duration can help your body burn up to 400 calories per session,
about 150 of which comes from fat stores.

High intensity workouts and of course training anaerobically («chronic
cardio» as so many «anti-aerobic» pundits yap
about) too often is a sure way to not only not develop your aerobic system, but end up sick, injured, or yeah even dead.
Given Marc's huge topic
about afterburn of resistance training and efficacy of HIIT
cardio, I'd like to indicate that Bikram yoga (and possibly other kinds I haven't attempted) includes a good deal of strength training (mostly the largest muscles i.e. legs, core and lower back with upper body coming as you go heavier) and feels pretty much like a
high intensity cardio work out for perhaps 60 - 70 of the 90 minutes — as well as the other advantages.
Once you are done with your strength training workout and you still have time for
cardio, go ahead and perform some
high intensity intervalls which I talk
about here.
For training during this phase, I did three
high -
intensity cardio sessions per week for
about 20 minutes each.
The Gwen Stefani workout is
about doing
high -
intensity cardio moves, often with dumbbells or medicine balls.
Properly strength training, as well as performing
high intensity interval training, is going to give you better results in less time than you'd spend complaining
about how boring your steady state
cardio is.
Now, I alternate this kind of low impact workout with my
higher intensity cardio workouts (spinning / running) and aim for
about two Megaformer or Pilates - type workouts per week.
I had anorexia when I was 14, and then since then have been trying to be «healthy,» by doing at first doing
high intensity, but eventually drifting into some sort of low
intensity cardio everyday (b / c did not have the energy for
high intensity stuff anymore) and learning everything I could
about food and what to eat / what not to eat (obsessive might be a good word to use here haha)... Mainly following «Nourishing Traditions» wisdom, but also did GAPS for over a year — while living a
high stress lifestyle, which I'm pretty sure tanked my adrenals among other things (think my thyroid was already pretty hypo at that point).
