As interest in the promise of evidence - based
home visiting programs to improve outcomes for children and families grows, policymakers and practitioners need guidance
about how to implement them effectively and sustain high - fidelity implementation over the long term.

about the mechanisms for these impacts, both direct and indirect, research will demonstrate the most effective approach to link
home visiting services and early childhood education and child care
programs to more fully realize positive outcomes.
More research is needed to guide decisions
about adoption, adaptation and replication, and support scale - up of evidence - based
home visiting programs.

At the beginning of the 20th century, successful reductions in mortality from summer diarrhea in central New York City were demonstrated after using student nurses in the

program showed lower infant mortality rates associated with
home visiting.
To that end, the primary purpose of this brief is to guide expectations
about the extent to which
home visiting programs can demonstrate significant and meaningful change when implemented at the community level.
Multiple barriers (e.g., work schedules) often prevent fathers from participating in
home visits, but fathers engage with
home visiting programs in other ways including attending other
program activities, completing homework or practicing lessons with the mother and child, or asking mothers
about the
visit.
Many
home visiting programs aim to educate parents
about the importance of supporting children's early learning through frequent reading and a stimulating
home environment and provide parents with the tools to support their children's early learning.15 In general, evaluations of
home visiting programs show fairly positive impacts on parents» support for children's learning, though the evidence is strongest for the most disadvantaged
program participants (e.g., poor, unmarried teens; very - low income participants).
