What
about the
collections of ebooks sold to
libraries in bulk?
Now
libraries offer their patrons an average of
about 10,000 ebooks for lending, either as part of the
library's own
collection or available through a consortium.
While the limited checkouts and renewal license fee structures offered can save
libraries money in the short - term,
collection specialists must be diligent
about e-book
collection management efforts to keep up renewals and with demand.
For schools and
libraries, ebooks will also need to be affordable, easy to integrate into their regular
collections, and easy to educate patrons
about.
As mentioned in our story
about the «bookless
library» BiblioTech in San Antonio and its use of SELF - e, the program is moving into high gear as
libraries around the country sign on as subscribers to SELF - e's
collections of independently produced ebooks.
Among the
library staff who responded to our questionnaire,
about half said that their
library pays for patron access to e-books out of a
collection budget.
The Freading ebook platform has only been live for
