Non-polar glacial ice holds a wealth of information
about past changes in climate, the environment and especially atmospheric composition, such as variations in temperature, atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and emissions of natural aerosols or human - made pollutants... The glaciers therefore hold the memory of former climates and help to predict future environmental changes.

But the AGU believes that a broader solution is needed, which is why the statement calls on members to become more involved not only

The focus of the debate on CO2 is not wholly predicated on its attribution to

in my posts on your website that I believe firmly that those deposits are
in quite a good bit of danger of melting from
climate change feedback mechanisms. On Nov 8th, ScienceDaily posted a huge new study on the PETM boundary 55 million years ago, and some key data on how the methane at that point may very well have melted and contributed to the massive

What really concerns me is that I've read a lot

Roughly, I'd guess the debates over global
climate change took place largely between 1981 and 1995; a good bit shorter than the debates over continental drift, but then there was less radical
about the idea of global
climate change — it was already known that the planet's
climate had
changed in the
past, so the idea that it might be
changing in the present was less radical than the idea that the vast continents might,
in fact, be drifting like huge floating islands.
Those concerned
about global warming (including at least one study author) are stressing that a longer evolutionary timeline implies the bears» adaptation to
climate change in the
past was a slow process (meaning the speed of
change now poses new threats).
However, our fortune would last much longer than that: the Milankovitch cycles can be calculated over millions of years with astronomical precision (and incidentally be used to predict the beginning of all the

climate change would arrive only
in about 50,000 years.

[Response: Well the discussion

I would like to read a book
about how the rate and degree of warming expected to take place over the next couple centuries compares with global warming episodes
in Earth's

If policy on
climate change waits until things are certain, it will be far too late (after all, there are still lots of arguments
about what has happened
in the
past 100, 1000 or more years — certainty is generally an illusive, unattainable goal on the really interesting problems and questions).

Concerning the «debate» highlighted by the above exchanges between Pielke and Holdren, the issue isnt
about analogues to
past droughts (which, by the way, the California resource managers were more interested
in), but
about the scientific evidence that California droughts have become more severe due to
climate change.

Regardless of what you think

The source document, the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), has been under harsh scrutiny over the
past weeks for a number of blunders, including the Climategate scandal, bogus claims
about Himalayan glacier melt, false assertions The Netherlands are drowning, deceptive hysteria over conditions
in the Amazon, exaggerations of vanishing polar ice caps, and fraudulent cover - up of Chinese temperature data.
Views
about climate change tend to differ by party and political ideology, as also was the case
in past surveys.
Scientists extract ice cores from ice sheets and ice caps, studying them to learn
about past changes in Earth's
climate.
Given that there is still much we do not know
about climate change — including why mean global temperature has been flat for the
past ten years — undermining confidence
in climate science can (further) undermine its ability to inform policy.
