The jars were well within their «Sell by» or «Best by» dates (not that that necessarily means anything), there was just something off - putting and funky
about them, and some had a slightly metallic taste suggestive of
rancidity.
I don't actually think the
rancidity issue is associated with the smoke point (I could be wrong
about that but I don't think so)... heating the oil even a little bit makes it unstable.
My doc told me to avoid nuts also, but it was not
about fat — rather
rancidity.

about 200o F for four or five hours, to prevent
rancidity — oats are rich in polyunsaturated oils that can go rancid within three months, especially at warm temperatures, and oats are harvested only once a year.
