about her new job and what she hopes to accomplish with news that the school district is not in compliance with federal law.
Leaders in the district of
about 47,000 students expect to lose $ 832,808 in
special education funding, $ 921,000 in Title I funding — which supports schools with a large number of low - income students — and $ 300,000 in funding for
programs that improve teacher quality, immigrant
education and assist the homeless, among others.
While
special education dollars (
about $ 50 billion nationally) can do good things for students where placements are appropriate and service models are well thought out, state legislatures and departments of
education need to understand that allowing districts to place more and more students into
special education programs does not actually improve
education outcomes, not even for the students placed therein.
I gained so much more knowledge
about the field of
special education advocacy than I had when I came into the
program.
