Just enough to know to FOLLOW THE
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES - we're not joking
about this.
There are several things that anger agents and publishers —
submissions that do not follow published
guidelines; badly written, unprofessional and bland query letters; and an author's inability to tell what their book is
about very cleanly and tightly... in 25 words.
Then, of course, we had the usual
submissions challenges — writers not reading
guidelines or submitting work that was well - written but didn't conform to the flavor of weird spec - fic that we were looking for (for some reason, many authors wanted to write
about Noah despite clear
guidelines to avoid it).
You can save time and money by planning in advance, being selective
about where you send review copies, and following
submission guidelines exactly.

For instance, use the style - guide they use, provide photos, a concise pitch for the story, details
about who you might interview, what your angle is, an approximate word - length, ask whether they want an invoice on
submission (or, if not, when), ask them what format they want the final piece in (check
submission guidelines online if you can).
It's not all as easy as it sounds however: BookBub has notoriously strict
submission guidelines, and even when those
guidelines are met, the fact that BookBub only accepts
about 10 % of
submissions means most authors will struggle to get approved.
There's a further concern
about Studio E books - there are no
submission guidelines on the site.
