Known as the Common Core, the new standards adopted across the country and in New York City classrooms this year have become a platform for opponents of school reform to sound off on everything else they dislike about the current education landscape, from teacher evaluation to testing.

During the two - and - a-half hour session, «Teacher Evaluation In the Classroom,» attended by about 200 people, stakeholders affected by the ongoing reform effort shared their perspectives with the audience while answering questions from both moderator John Mooney, education writer and co-founder of New Jersey Spotlight magazine, and audience members comprised largely of concerned parents and educators.

Specifically, officials at the state and district levels have had difficulty building staff capacity for implementing the reforms, meeting the requirements to develop teacher evaluations and increase student learning time, and gathering data on performance in SIG schools to make decisions about future grant renewals.

Today, U.S. Secretary Arnie Duncan and Governor Dan Malloy will be holding a press conference about «education reform» and the Connecticut legislation that increases the number of standardized tests, seeks to improve test scores and begins the process of tying test scores to teacher evaluations so that administrators can determine which teachers to keep and which to let go.
