In my
therapy work with couples I see that
trauma, in the current relationship or prior to, can cause blocks in bonding and leaves a partner confused
about how to repair the bond.
However, unlike other forms of empirically supported
trauma treatments, it is not necessary for the person in
therapy to speak or write
about the memory in detail or do homework in order to achieve positive effects.
I use various approaches to treating
trauma survivors (including EMDR which is a specialized form of
therapy) but my interventions are always based on close collaboration with each client
about their needs / preferences.
Symptoms of unprocessed
trauma - including dissociation, numbing, and chronic anxiety - are notoriously difficult to eliminate through talk
therapy, since the overwhelmed brain is unable to process verbal information
about the events.
