Leading this
section is Sam Francis's Blue in Motion III, 1960 - 1962 (estimate: $ 400,000 - 600,000) pictured
above right, a work which captures the spiritual approach and innovative style of Francis's
painting.
The picture is divided into nine
sections — three distinct vertical panels marked by three horizontal bands of pictorial activity — and the image is almost quartered by the intersection of the red and white lines of
paint mentioned
above.

The
paintings are separated into four
sections, Of Brute Matter (I - VI), Where the Light is as Darkness (I - IV), As
Above So Below (I - VI), and Here's Looking at You Too (I - II).
In some
paintings, the figure of Mao can be seen either
painted within the landscape, emerging from the flowers his hand in a beckoning salute or, in some cases,
painted on a
section of canvas placed either
above the central panel or on one side.
The brown tiled wall
section was replaced with white
painted (same color as
above) wood wainscoting to break up the bold pattern on these very large walls.
