Rail: As much as you had reduced your «Big
Nude» to black and white while adapting the monumental scale of
abstract expressionist
painting, did you think you were going against the grain of what was happening at the time?
On view are «Large Dark Figure» (1962 — 63), a shadowy,
abstract painting, and «Two Sisters» (1976), a highly realistic work of two female
nudes, both of which reveal the range of her exploration into how best to capture her subjects.
Instead of seeing Czanne's «The Bather» first thing when you enter the second - floor galleries, where «People» unfolds, you see an expansively open space with only two works: Aristide Maillol's luxuriant cast - lead female
nude, «The River» (1938 - 1943), and beyond it, Barnett Newman's
abstract painting, «Vir Heroicus Sublimis» (1950 - 51).
Paintings from the 1950s include such works as Stephen Pace's Untitled (51 - 90), a dynamic
abstract painting in which forms move into and through the picture plane in the mode of the art of Pace's teacher Hans Hofmann, Melville Price's Untitled (ca. 1959), a gestural
