The most recent report (PDF) on climate science from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made clear that we still don't know how sensitive the climate system is to CO2, nor what disruptive feedbacks may emerge as ecosystems dry out, ice caps disappear and permafrost melts — all of which potentially could
accelerate warming beyond human control.

Projected temperature and precipitation increases may be favorable in the short term for some Montana crops and forage production, but the effects of
warming will become increasingly disruptive as they
accelerate beyond adaptation thresholds.
He and others have also proposed that soot, by darkening Arctic ice and snow, could be
accelerating the boreal melt well
beyond what would happen only under natural climate variability or the growing
warming influence from greenhouse gases.
The U.S. will need to follow a similar path to Uruguay's if it hopes to make any meaningful dent in carbon emissions before global
warming accelerates beyond our ability to keep up.

Beyond increasing atmospheric
warming, because the soot coats the surface of the snow and ice it changes the albedo of the surface, allowing it to absorb more sunlight and thereby
accelerating melting.
