Students have the chance to
accelerate and gain workforce skills, but roadblocks to
dual enrollment remain
Today, as legislators see it,
dual enrollment offers something for everyone: academic enrichment for kids who have maxed out the honors and
accelerated classes their schools offer; a glimpse of college rigor for high school laggards; and a leg up on a career for those who enroll in trade programs.
Smarter Balanced scores also will be used in several states to identify students who are ready for
accelerated options such as

This study, comparing the high school and college transcripts of more than 400 students who participated in
dual enrollment courses (but not in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses) with the transcripts of students with similar GPA's and class rank, but who took no
accelerated learning courses, showed that:
School turnaround strategies for low - achieving high schools included increasing the rigor of curriculum through
accelerated coursework, including

Such programs can take many forms, including specialized charter schools; «blended learning» schools in which students take
accelerated online courses that supplement traditional, teacher - based instruction; curricular plans that allow students to graduate in fewer than 13 years; and «early college» high schools and «

enrollment programs are partnerships between local educational agencies (LEAs) and Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) that allow high school students to enroll in college courses and earn transferable college credit, setting them on an
accelerated path to postsecondary success.
For the last five years, the Administration has proposed budgets that include funding for low - income student participation in
dual and concurrent
enrollment in a proposed College Pathways and
Accelerated Learning fund — which Congress has not funded.
