DKI, or Dynamic
Keyword Insertion (which automatically
matches your ad headlines with the user's search query), is a highly controversial topic among us Google
account managers.
And with Facebook's interest targeting, Kim said marketers can target consumers who
match additional interests as well, while Twitter follower and
keyword targeting helps marketers zero in on Twitter users with interests similar to specific
accounts.
Broad
match keywords also help to
account for any kind of
keyword variation possible too.
Note that the most generic prefixes and suffixes (like «the») have now been almost entirely broad -
matched out of existence, so if you see a prefix or suffix getting no traffic, this may be the reason (and you should probably delete that
keyword to clean up your
account).
Indeed, I sometimes wonder whether
keyword selection still deserves to be a top seven SEM technique, since the search engines continue to ramp up their broad
matching technology (see, for example, Google's recent «advanced broad
match» announcement and Yahoo's new terms and conditions which allow them to optimize your
accounts for you), making it more and more difficult to find
keywords where your competitors are not.
Note that I don't count
match types as part of the total number of
keywords in your campaign — in other words, if you have 5000
keywords but you
match each of these three times, your
account would have a total of 15,000
keywords, which I still think is acceptable without «overdoing it.»
Recently, I witnessed an
account capture 30 % less traffic because the
keyword match was changed from broad to phrase
match in Google.

App rankings for search results now appear to take into
account factors that go beyond simple
keyword listings, like partial
keyword matches and competitor brand names, somewhat de-emphasizing the
keywords that developers enter manually.

The way in which companies use their search for
keywords varies; some companies may weight
keywords based on importance where other companies consider all
keywords equal; some companies may strongly take into
account how many of the
keywords match the skills, education, and other words they are looking for while others may be more lenient.
