Any Canadian resident who is 18 years of age or older will begin to
accumulate contribution room in 2009, no income is needed.
If you are eligible, you will
accumulate contribution room each year.
Do you have to open an account for the accumulated room to add up, or does everyone
accumulate contribution room starting from 2009 if they are 18 or older even if they have never opened an account?
So far, at least, the government has allowed people to
accumulate contribution room.
You can only put in an amount up to
your accumulated contribution room, regardless of how your investments perform.

contribution room, as of 2016.
The

accumulates — if you don't save the max in 2009 you can load up the TFSA with $ 10,000 the next year.
What I find most exciting about the TFSA is that
contribution room accumulates every year whether you invest or not.
So in December of 2016, Morgan contributed $ 6,000 to his TFSA, exceeding the maximum

Or, if you're like most people and have plenty of
accumulated RRSP
room, real estate proceeds provide plenty of cash to make RRSP
contributions.
There are two main options for taking out «income» (now termed «
accumulated income payments» or AIPs): if you as contributor withdraw the funds, then the AIP withdrawal is taxed in your hands at your tax rates plus an additional 20 % penalty; alternatively, you can roll up to $ 50,000 in AIP money over into an RRSP if you have unused RRSP
contribution room.
Assuming that continues to be the case, or at least that they don't take away the
contribution room you have
accumulated, there is no rush to contribute to an RSP.
On the flip side, whenever you don't max out your TFSA, that unused
contribution room accumulates and rolls over into the following year's limit.
E.g.. For people buying $ 1M homes it is unlikely they can both repay the mortgage plus
accumulate enough to use up all TFSA and RRSP

Your RRSP
contribution room, which may be used in subsequent years, will
accumulate only if a tax return is filed.

2 — using RRSP's for short term arbitrage eats up
contribution room permanently, meaning you won't be able to ever
accumulate long term savings in an RRSP
Fortunately, the Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a perfect vehicle for this and the
accumulated TFSA
contribution room since the program's launch in 2009 is now $ 25,500: rising to $ 31,000 this coming January.
Consider the following example: You're 26, live in Alberta, and decide to put $ 5,500 in a TFSA annually (it's worth noting that up until this point, you'll have
accumulated $ 52,000 in TFSA
contribution room).
But for younger folks earning modest incomes, TFSA
room will now
accumulate more quickly than RRSP
contribution room.
