What role can researchers play in closing
achievement gaps and expanding equitable
outcomes for students?
Promote the assessment of critical thinking as a necessary
student outcome for success; ensure assessments used show discriminant validity from standard
achievement or intellectual tests
The key assumption
for identification underlying all of our estimates is the conditional independence assumption (CIA), which assumes that there are no variables omitted from our matching process that affect both the choice of textbook and the
outcome (
student achievement).
Experiments, which provide the most credible results, are rare in education, and relatively few studies that address
students»
outcomes observe the professional norm of having detailed controls
for students» background characteristics (including previous academic
achievement).
«The ultimate goal of the study is to further develop the existing literature on school
outcomes for LGBT
students of color, and to explore possible interventions that might address the existing gaps in academic
achievement and mental health,» she says.
There are therefore several things to think about as we further explore the AEI study: long term
outcomes do indeed matter a lot, especially
for poor kids; if large test - score gains don't eventually translate into improved long term
outcomes, it is a legitimate cause
for concern; and we must stay open to the possibility that some programs could help kids immensely over the long haul, even if they don't immediately improve

Although every school system has its own set of unique challenges, several challenges are universal and, therefore, would be good candidates
for competitive programs: developing new models of teacher preparation; developing new forms of in - service training
for teachers which actually improve
student outcomes; spreading effective charter school practices; and closing the
achievement gap.
«Subtle» aspects of family involvement — parenting style and parental expectations,
for example — may have a greater impact on
student achievement than more «concrete» forms such as attendance at school conferences or enforcing rules at home regarding homework.144 Some researchers, policy makers, and practitioners argue that these subtle forms of family involvement are not easily influenced by schools.145 In contrast, we argue that the value of creating participatory structures in schools lies in its potential
for increasing family and community members «sense of engagement in children «s education, and, as a consequence, augment and reinforce the subtle behaviors responsible
for improved
outcomes.146
Under this plan, state education agencies would be granted flexibility in meeting certain NCLB requirements in exchange
for «rigorous State - developed plans designed to improve educational
outcomes for all
students, close
achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction» (Department of Education, October 2011).
The purposes of the observations were to gain an understanding of the instructional activities in the schools, which should assist us to better place the
student achievement outcomes within a context; provide some corroboration
for the claims made by the various district and building interviewees about the teaching and learning conditions in the school; and provide a basis
for discussion during the teacher interviews that would follow the observations.
These studies showing the direct positive effects of raising household income — even by small amounts — on
student achievement make it plain that reducing poverty through stable, living wage jobs
for all working families would also help improve educational
outcomes.
What to know: The Mississippi Department of Education's (MDE) plan stands out
for aligning its teacher recruitment and retention efforts with its ambitious goals
for increasing
student academic
achievement by 2025 and clearly stating its role in supporting districts to address equity concerns.10 The MDE recognizes that in order to reach its stated goals — which include a proposed graduation rate of 90 percent
for all
students by 2025 — they must also support districts in recruiting and retaining teachers of color who are prepared to improve
student outcomes.
