of the Collection explores how a museum collection constructs and embodies histories to be reconsidered over time, offering various views into the museum's own history and its collections right up to the present day, through monographic installations
of individual
works or bodies
of work by
key artists and designers, thematic surveys, archival research projects, special projects and recent
acquisitions.
These historical exhibitions are still highly relevant: in 2011 the Stedelijk Museum organized a retrospective
of «Op Losse Schroeven» resulting in the
acquisition of the group
of works from that exhibition;
key works both from the exhibition and within Boezems oeuvre.
As Director and Chief Executive Officer at MUNAL since 2013, Arteaga has enhanced its exhibition program through
key international partnerships, dramatically grown its annual attendance, established new streams
of institutional support, and expanded the museum's collection
of over 7,000
works with more than 35 strategic gifts and
acquisitions — including major
works by Diego Rivera, Francisco Zúñiga, Gabriel Orozco, and Abraham Cruzvillegas.
The most recent new
acquisition to be included in the show is 20 Pieces
of Road Measuring 100 x 100 cm Pulled up from the Ground (1992), a
key work by the Latin American concept and action artist Santiago Sierra.
The collection
of contemporary photographs and time - based media has also grown in recent years, with
key acquisitions of work by Uta Barth, Sophie Calle, James Casebere, Chuck Close, Paul Graham, Philip - Lorca diCorcia, Vera Lutter, Sally Mann, Richard Misrach, Mark Ruwedel, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.
The collection's forward - looking
acquisition strategy, accompanied by in - depth local research, has enabled it to purchase
key works by well - known international artists, but also pieces by members
of the younger generation
of artists (born around 1980) who are not yet widely known in Germany.
The film relates thematically and intellectually to a number
of key recent
acquisitions by the museum, including
work by Walid Raad, Fiona Tan, Emily Jacir, Barbara Krueger and Jenny Holzer.
The MFAH also made a landmark
acquisition of 300 photographs by Ishimoto Yasuhiro, a
key figure in both Japanese and American post-World War II photography, and mounted the first
of three planned exhibitions exploring the newly acquired
works.
We are particularly pleased to have been awarded match funding for the IMMA 1000
acquisitions fund by Minister Humphreys which will allow us to really maximise these individual donations and purchase a number
