Researchers from the University of Liverpool have found an unusual mass of rock deep in
the active fault line beneath Chile which influenced the rupture size of a massive earthquake that struck the region in 2010.
The largest earthen dam in the U.S., it was constructed on
an active fault line in the 1950s and filled in 1968.

The researchers determined that the earthquakes at Abu Dabbab extend in a
line from the coast into the Red Sea, «and the seismicity pattern is arc - shaped in depth, confined to the dome - like structure of the rigid igneous body that formed during the Precambrian era» above an
active fault, El Khrepy said.

By comparing the repeat - pass radar observations, scientists hope to measure any crustal deformations that may occur between observations, allowing them to «see» the amount of strain building up on
fault lines, and giving them a clearer picture of which
faults are
active and at what rates they're moving, both before earthquakes and after them.
The country is also known as the «hinge of Africa,» as a geologic
fault line runs through it, and the area is, consequently, very seismically
active.
