Whereas de Kooning embraced
active, dynamic brushwork in such milestones as Woman I, 1950 - 52, Diebenkorn's compositions bring together soft
planes of color that undulate and flow within the frame.
The figures, forms, architectural elements, and space, which are constituted by layers
of overlapping imagery that exist between abstraction and representation, remain
active on the picture
plane with their seemingly melting
colors.
