Actress race is full of

contenders from early in the year, like Salma Hayek in Beatriz at Dinner, and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman, and even Kristen Stewart in Personal Shopper, the women that seem to be capturing the zeitgeist or buzz or excitement right now are the ones who push outward from the barriers that hold them down — characters who do not accept the lot they've been given.
Last week this column took a look at the quickly tightening best
actress race (in the wake of two drop outs via Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard),
so it seemed appropriate to turn the table over to their male counterparts, especially since one of the main
contenders in that arena also headed to 2014 last week.
So if guys like Tapley and Feinberg turn out to be right, you're really looking at only one Best
Actress contender in the entire Best Picture lineup — unless Florence Foster Jenkins miraculously gets in for BP.
She was
so good in that movie that the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle honored her with their Best Supporting
Actress award, meaning that she beat out
contenders like Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird), and Mary J. Blige (Mudbound).
On the other hand, should a younger
contender sneak up and snatch it away like, let's say Hailee Steinfeld, younger actors will be needed for the roles of Peeta and Gale
so as to complement the 14 - year - old
actress.
But we're happy to pick up the slack: There are many worthy
contenders this year, especially deaf
actress and newcomer Millicent Simmonds, who conveyed
so much depth without a single word in «Wonderstruck.»
