The use (and abuse) of a very young child in peril
as a
plot device is something I approach with caution, but in this case, without giving away too much of the final
act, I feel it is largely justified by the story.

plot devices (a Dubliner stalked by his evil doppelganger), with hammy
acting to match, this attempt to highlight the social cost of Ireland's economic revival suffers from the same identity crisis
as its tormented hero.
Further, it begins to intercut between this framing
device and the actual
plot of the film for the rest of the runtime (this is something that happens in
act one
as well, but is gratefully scaled back during the adventure on the dinghy itself).
