Seemingly inconsequential
acts of sacrifice and love impact others in ways we could never imagine.
Remarkable
acts of sacrifice would suddenly be performed.
Perhaps after several months or years of putting aside their own needs in favor of the other spouse, and after countless
acts of sacrifice and love, they may have found that there was a relationship worth saving there.
The act of sacrifice may stand as an example for many other cultic acts, the performance of which has a socially integrating effect.

of a world in need.
This is true whether a Christian soldier is
sacrificing his life for the sake
of Country, or taking the life
of another human in an
act of war.
The Incarnation is thus an
act of genuine self -
sacrifice, a complete emptying out
of God's being.
In this activity
of procreation and care for children the self - regarding and self - serving ways
of the parents are to a large degree transformed into
acts of self - giving and self -
sacrifice.

For the all - important work
of molding our most important possession, our own self — which is in fact the only thing that is truly our own — for molding this into something that has depth and breadth and substance, for nurturing it beyond the shallow and brittle and empty,
acts of love and courage and self -
sacrifice are needed.
