«The jets must be supersonic, with Mach
numbers of two or greater, but because
of cooling
of the water vapor in the eruption throat, the
actual velocity may not be as high as we thought previously,» said Larry Esposito, a conference organizer and a professor
of astrophysical and planetary sciences in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and
Space Physics (LASP) at the University
of Colorado, Boulder.
