For — in any other serious scientific / engineering endeavour — a detailed, available and
up to date knowledge of the state of all your
measuring instruments, their service history and calibration, their external and internal surroundings and anything else that could potentially affect their readings is a prereq
to making sure that you are
actually collecting valid data.
