The kitchenette is super small and someone who lived here before
us added upper cabinets that made it feel dark and closed in.
So the bottom part of my office was finished, but I still wanted to
add some upper cabinets to this space.
In the Emerson Project kitchen, we knew we didn't want to
add another upper cabinet.

oh, and with our
uppers, since we
added that open shelf down low, I decided to make the middle section open shelving — it still needs trim to make it look like it's supposed to be shelving and not just a
cabinet with the doors off:

upper cabinets, painted the lowers, reconfigured the island, updated the countertops,
added beadboard for the backsplash and installed open shelves.

uppers meet the new
uppers that we
added.

adding height to your
upper cabinets.

Spend two months Google searching and studying any and all tutorials on how to
add height to your
upper cabinets.
If your
cabinets are too short, like ours were,
add a 1 × 6 and some crown moulding to the top of the existing
upper cabinets.

Fully functional: The designer was careful to maximize every square inch of space,
adding a custom countertop above the washer and dryer for ample folding room, budget - friendly
upper and lower
cabinets for housing bulky items and pretty baskets and canisters for catch - all purposes.
I have one additional wall that divides the kitchen from the mud room which I'm going to
add lower
cabinets to with glass front
upper cabs.

Even if you still think I'm crazy for removing
upper cabinets in a small kitchen, ha, keep in mind we will be

Besides refacing the lower

uppers removed in favour of airy open shelving and
added the textured porcelain backsplash.
One of the things I was most excited about in choosing a simple neutral color scheme for my kitchen (with charcoal base

uppers) is that I could have fun by

upper cabinets weighing down this small kitchen, the space feels so much cleaner and way more open.

Your ceiling height will dictate what configuration you can accommodate, but
adding to your
upper cabinets can really make a big difference.
Add architectural details like corbels under you
upper cabinets and wainscoting to the walls.

cabinet lights we need to install.

After the drop, we had to carefully patch the ceiling tiles where the
upper cabinets were removed and
add a toe kick to the «new» peninsula, raising it off the floor to proper height.

And I'm not talking just light gray
cabinets — today's kitchens are
