height layer.

speaker modules which fire upward at the ceiling, thus relying on boundary reflection to provide the illusion that the special effects are originating from overhead.
Dolby Atmos
adds a couple of extra left and right
speakers to a conventional 5.1 setup, either placed above listening
height or, more commonly, by firing sound at an angle upwards to the ceiling which bounces back to the listener, creating the illusion of all - encompassing sound.
DTS Virtual: X technology in an A / V receiver will provide an immersive sound experience without the need for rear surround and
height speakers while still allowing consumers to upgrade for an even better immersive sound experience when they're able to
add additional
speakers to their system.
By
adding discrete channels for ceiling - mounted or ceiling - facing
speakers in A / V receivers at home,
height channels are now represented as their own separate entities, leading to an extra number used to represent home surround channels.
As mentioned above, the most common configurations are 5.1.2 or 5.1.4, which
add two and four
height speakers to a traditional 5.1 surround setup respectively, though Dolby supports much larger configurations.
