As with other screening (developmental and behavioral,
psychosocial) initiatives in practice, there have been perceived barriers to implementation, including lack of time, incomplete training to diagnose / counsel, lack of
adequate mental health referral sources, fear that screening means ownership of the problem, and lack of reimbursement.36 However, since 2000, there have been many successful models of screening in primary
care practices, including developmental and behavioral screening, maternal depression screening, and
psychosocial screening.
