Often what churches need is not a better
understanding of the
faith, but a more
adequate knowledge
of the society in which they are trying to live it out.
And yet we find ourselves in the strongest agreement with the German scholar, Professor von Rad, whom we have cited before, in his own expressed feeling that after all, legend is not an
adequate term, so long as it is commonly
understood simply as a mixture
of history and unrestrained popular imagination (one part history, nine parts imagination — our comment, not his) We much better
understand legend as a combination
of history and meditation, and as motivated primarily by a concern to give expression to the meaning
of history, as that meaning is conveyed by the
faith that God makes himself known therein.12
To that kind
of understanding the specifically Christian
faith makes an addition which provides a much more
adequate assurance about such establishment and preservation.
I myself am inclined to agree with Barr about the poverty
of this postfundamentalist theology and tradition for the future
of evangelicalism — though I would want my evangelical colleagues to
understand clearly that I reject this tradition not to reject biblical or evangelical
faith but to seek rather a more
adequate conceptual framework through which to be more faithful to the Scriptures.
Early in
Faith and Order inquiries it became apparent that formal comparative examination
of the confessional and other utterances
of the churches was not
adequate for a responsible
understanding either
of what these churches affirmed in common or asserted in difference.
The distinguished Cardinal Schönborn is frank in the Foreword
of this book: «the period following the Second Vatican Council was one
of confusion in... the Church,... not least in the educational sphere... teachers, professors, and administrators lacked an
adequate understanding of their role as evangelists, charged with transmitting the
faith to the next generation.
