But 10 of 14 were also giving up at least 25
adjusted points per game.
Since 2006, 46 teams have improved by at least 14
adjusted points per game (per S&P +) from one year to the next.
In terms of
adjusted points per game, the defense improved by eight points, the offense by 5.5.
Not exact matches
Final committee No. 2 Oklahoma gave up more
points per game than UCF did and had a worse defense, according to both schedule -
adjusted S&P + and the events of New Year's Day.
The last four UVA teams have all been in the top 40 nationally in
adjusted efficiency rating, but they haven't been near that in total
points per game: 287th, 223rd, 232nd, 309th.
Tennessee is No. 7 overall in Ken Pomeroy's rankings, it ranks fifth in the country in
adjusted defensive efficiency, and it entered Tuesday's
game scoring a terrific 1.16
points per possession in conference contests.
(And yes, ranking 105th with an
adjusted point total of 22.4
points per game qualified as massive progress in 2015, coming off of 2014's «maybe the worst offense I've ever seen» performance.)
But offense wasn't necessarily the problem for a lot of SEC teams; plenty had an
adjusted scoring average over 30
points per game.
Two factors
adjusting the total downward though are the Steelers stingy defense, which is allowing just 12.3
points per game, and their +7 turnover differential.
