Spending too much time on advance book promotion is probably as bad of a decision as spending no time on
advance book publicity.
Can you allot too much lead time and too much of your resources to
advance book publicity?
How would you know how much time and money you should invest in
advance book publicity?
At least, as an independent book publicist, I have found that it would be in your best interest to learn that there are book promotion opportunities after
the advance book publicity campaign has come to a hard stop.

Not exact matches
Every shrewd publicist knows that the best way to sell a
book is to generate lots of
advance publicity.
(I seldom did, with 12
books by major publishers... never any
publicity, little editing, very little money over the small
advance, sigh.)
Advance book promotion isn't the same thing as post-publication
book publicity.
ARCs:
Advanced Reader Copies are the trusted warhorse of
book publicity.
One of the key elements of a professional marketing and
publicity campaign is the
advance review copy (ARC)-- also known as a galley — usually produced and distributed three to six months before the final
book goes on sale.
But
book publicity opportunities do not end with
advance publicity efforts.
Successful
book marketing, selling, distribution, and
publicity don't exactly require
advanced degrees or special talents or even luck.
ARCs, or
Advance Reader Copies, are remarkable assets to authors because they get the
books straight into the hands of
book reviewers, peer reviewers, bloggers, and other people who may offer input, endorsements, or
publicity for your
book.
In New York the
publicity budget is spent on the authors who receive the biggest
advances because the publisher needs to sell enough
books to recoup the
advance.
In fact, I'm fairly certain that the
advance they offer, along with the
publicity dollars they put into a
book, are directly related to how many sales they think it will achieve.

Now, here's the thing —
advances of these size will generally mean your
book will have little to no
publicity budget.
Please let your publicist know in
advance of any travel plans you are making for the months following the
book's publication, especially if these plans might allow some time for
book promotion and
publicity.
