When
school breakfast is served early in the morning and only in the cafeteria, many teens can't or won't take
advantage of it.
Reading the comment carefully, you understand that the father (and child) feel less shame about taking
advantage of school meals at
breakfast, where the service is universal (available to all regardless
of economic need) versus at lunch, where there is often a more visible distinction between paying and nonpaying students, or between students on the federally reimbursable lunch line versus those who can purchase for - cash (and often more desirable) «a la carte» food, or (in the case
of high
schoolers) between students who can go off campus to buy lunch at convenience stores and restaurants versus those with no money in their pockets.
Unfortunately it doesn't appear that too many students take
advantage of the free
breakfast benefit (maybe 20 %
of the
school?).

I'm back from summer vacation in time to share some nice news: Houston ISD, the seventh largest district in the country, has announced that it's taking
advantage of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) to provide universal (free)
school breakfast and lunch to every student at 166
of its
schools, regardless
of economic status, and without the need for meal applications or other paperwork.
New York has one
of the lowest
school breakfast participation rates in the country, with less than 40 percent
of low - income students taking
advantage of the meals, which can include yogurt, fruits, juices and
breakfast cereals served with low - fat milk.
The researchers also compared sugary ready - to - eat cereal to oatmeal and found oatmeal's nutritional
advantage (more nourishing whole food meal) made it a better choice at improving brain power and encouraging better test scores.1 Additional stats show higher test grades and better
school attendance in
breakfast eaters than in non-
breakfast eaters too.2 Bottom line: to excel in whatever we do, whether it be
school, work, play or relationships, we need
breakfast to be at the top
of our mental game.
