This superb follow - up to
Wonder Boy in Monster Land is one of the strongest cases for the console, a non-linear action /
adventure as epic as anything Nintendo gave us on the NES.
Stranger still, the
Wonder Boy series deviated in favor of arcadey action RPGs while
Adventure Island mostly stuck to the formula of the first game.

Adventure Island actually started off as a port of Sega's
Wonder Boy arcade game, but the decision was made to create an original character during development.
Unfortunately, while
Wonder Boy has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years, the
Adventure Island series hasn't appeared since an obscure 2009 WiiWare game.
As for action
adventures along the lines of Zelda, Golvellius provided a colorful and quirky alternative, while
Wonder Boy in Monster Land and
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap are arguably among the best side - scrolling action
adventure games ever made.
