Dr Brown emphasised that: «Over the last two and half decades, our scientific understanding of climate change and sea - level rise, and how it will
affect coastal zones has greatly increased.

On Sunday, 80 employees arrived from Austin, Texas capital far from the danger
zone, to stock stores in Corpus Christi, a
coastal city hit by the storm and by Tuesday more workers from San Antonio were moving to Victoria, another
affected city.
The researchers undertook the study in light of concerns about decreasing levels of oxygen in
coastal waters worldwide, and how the growing prevalence of low - oxygen «dead
zones» might
affect populations and management of blue crabs and other
coastal marine life.
Global warming will also mean more forest fires; hurricanes hitting cities that are at present too far north of the equator to be
affected by them; tropical diseases spreading beyond their present
zones; the extinction of species unable to adapt to warmer temperatures; retreating glaciers and melting polar icecaps; and rising seas inundating
coastal areas.
While much research on the effects of shallow
coastal dead
zones has been published, little is understood on how this expansion will
affect open ocean ecosystems.
Whereas some
coastal dead
zones could be recovered by control of fertilizer usage, expanded low - oxygen areas caused by global warming will remain for thousands of years to come, adversely
affecting fisheries and ocean ecosystems far into the future.
Changes in land use over the past centuries have
affected the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nutrients in the
coastal zone strongly (Nixon 1995; Doney 2010; Hooke and Martín - Duque 2012).
However, the conditions predicted for the open ocean may not reflect the future conditions in the
coastal zone, where many of these organisms live (Hendriks et al. 2010a, b; Hofmann et al. 2011; Kelly and Hofmann 2012), and results derived from changes in pH in
coastal ecosystems often include processes other than OA, such as emissions from volcanic vents, eutrophication, upwelling and long - term changes in the geological cycle of CO2, which commonly involve simultaneous changes in other key factors
affecting the performance of calcifiers, thereby confounding the response expected from OA by anthropogenic CO2 alone.
