Establish an author platform (again, months or maybe even years before the release of your book) through a blog / website and sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. and create a network of potential readers and other people in the industry through your author platform who are likely to want to know about, spread the word about, read and / or buy your book.
Now, Mike Rohde is back, again with a series of numbered blog posts that engage prospective readers and build interest in his book while he's writing it.
Indeed, one of our most astute observers of the realm and a great, favorite colleague of mine, Philip Jones in London, wrote in his Future present blog post at The Bookseller that «newspaper critics» of Brown «once again show how disconnected they are from readers
And then I remembered, I had an agent, a great agent, I wrote great books (so all the rejecting editors told me) and yes, you are right, self pub has given my stories a voice and an ear and the chance to be read, when they otherwise would have still been gathering dust on my hard drive, yet, on the other hand this is hard, REALLY HARD, it is SO hard to find your way to a readership as a SP, with limited funds (dwindling)... and the glimmer of trad pub — with their power to splash your name around established circles of readers, and their ability to secure a great number of reviews where, as a self pub, doors have been slammed in my face — becomes temptingly shiny again, (it's like childbirth, you forget all the painful stuff with time)... and it all gets very tempting... almost tempting enough to consider sacrificing one work JUST one artistic premise for the trade off of visibility... and then perhaps, just perhaps THEN, my SP efforts will finally sprout wings... but then I hear you and other say, it wasn't worth it, you'd never do it again, and I sigh... And then I wake up the next morning and think of packing it all in, and going to work for Walmart and steady shitty pay... lol And then along comes this blog post.
Like interning or freelance writing with no contract or financial agreement in place beyond maybe a few bucks, guest blogging to help out other authors and hoping to gain a few readers, blog tours where again, you read and review to help out other authors, and yes, even blogging, all of it is done for free with little to no compensation and no guarantee it will further your writerly aspirations in the long run.
Again, none of these findings should shock most readers of this blog.
Again familiar to readers of this blog, this point is consistent with research showing that people who «think like scientists» tend to use their skills to reinforce existing social, political, and cultural group allegiances.
We imagine that readers of this blog probably are well - aware of the details behind this reality, as we have laid them out on many occasions, so we won't go into them again here.
Before doing so, I yet again encourage the readers of this blog and comments to do their own investigations.
