The North Carolina State University (2) published a vaccination protocol in 2001 that «highly recommended» vaccination
against distemper with a modified live vaccine but noted that, because some studies indicate that dogs are still protected for five years or more when challenged by the disease, «a booster vaccination of every three years among adult dogs is reasonable.»
Most puppies are protected
against distemper with the first vaccine if it's not given too early... yet most puppies are given a combination vaccine containing distemper at 12 to 16 weeks and older — when they're already protected for distemper and really only need the parvovirus.
