The point is that the
formula for the DALR comes from the assumption that the air heats down low and rises, expanding adiabatically into the air above it (doing work
against its increased pressure / density) and cooling as a consequence, a process that only «stops» when there is a uniform lapse between the
warm bottom and the actively cooled top.
