For those of you that are parents and family members of
school -
aged children, what other ways
do you see that
schools and communities can
better engage you
in your children's social - emotional and academic learning?
All students of all
ages are
well capable of expressing themselves and their opinions, experiences and ideas
in schools and about education
in healthy and positive ways, given substantive opportunities to
do that.
While I applaud the multi-pronged approach including raising the
age for gun purchases to 21, implementing a mandatory 3 day waiting period,
better background checks, increased funding for mental health services, adding more SROs to campuses, et cetera, I firmly
do not believe that arming teachers
in schools should be part of the solution.
No one has talked about correlating test scores with attendance with
age, or about early interventions to prevent later dropouts, or about a host of other
well researched tools available to teachers and
schools to reduce retention - the absolutely worst thing a
school can
do to a student (according to virtually all relevant research, as reviewed
in John Hattie's Visible Learning).
Those who start at
age 3
do better in later reading than those who start at
age 4, and starting
school at
age 4 is
better than starting at
age 5.
