Springtime cold
air outbreaks (at least two consecutive days
during which the daily average surface
air temperature is below 95 % of the simulated average wintertime surface
air temperature) are projected to continue to occur throughout this century.19 As a result, increased productivity of some crops due to higher temperatures, longer growing
seasons, and elevated CO2 concentrations could be offset by increased freeze damage.20
Heat waves
during pollination of field crops such as corn and soybean also reduce yields (Figure 18.3).4 Wetter springs may reduce crop yields and profits, 21 especially if growers are forced to switch to late - planted, shorter -
season varieties.
For instance, ground source
heat pumps tend to have higher efficiencies than
air source units
during the
heating season due to the relative stability of ground temperatures below certain depths, though
air source units — which involve much lower capital costs — have closed the gap in recent years as manufacturers have refined their design, and there is evidence to indicate that space
heating demand in many Irish buildings may be peaking in Ireland's frequently relatively mild but windy weather, as the guide to
air source
heat pumps in Issue 24 of Passive House Plus discussed.
We may otherwise be giving back some of the benefits via: leaky chimney dampers; low R value masonry and metal chimneys which penetrate the building envelope (both
heating and cooling penalties depending on the
season); convective
air currents arising from temperature differentials inside large chimneys; metal pipe
air intakes which can be quite difficult to insulate, channeling cold into the envelope 24/7
during heating season; backdrafting through leaky woodstove doors; and so forth.
In mixed climates, building envelopes are constructed in an airtight manner to control
air leakage openings, to expedite
air pressure control (depressurization of the building envelope above grade
during the
heating season, pressurization below grade to control ingress of soil gas and other pollutants, and pressurization of the building envelope
during the cooling
season) and to facilitate the dehumidification of indoor
air during the cooling
season, thereby limiting interior moisture levels.
Although each carrier is different, under most insurance policies, if your house is unoccupied for more than four consecutive days
during the
heating season, your insurance will not cover water damage from the freezing of any part of a plumbing,
heating, or
air - conditioning system, or an appliance such as a washing machine or dishwasher.
