air leakage testing, and construction quality assurance.
During initial construction stages of project, we performed
air leakage testing at a small sample of apartment units at intermediate stages of scope to assess success of implementation and help the contractor understand air sealing measures.
Table 2 lists
the air leakage test results for each of the houses.

If you detect a significant amount of
air escaping past the intake valve during the leakdown
test, try tapping on the intake valve with a plastic mallet to see if this will reduce the
leakage.
The
air leakage paths need a pressure
test to identify them, but when
air testing in a Victorian building like this, fabric
leakage may be overshadowed by losses through the windows and sash boxes, making it harder to spot the other issues.
Air leakage performance was measured via multipoint blower door
testing.
Total apartment enclosure
air leakage performance was assessed by
testing apartments in a fully unguarded configuration, that is, with neighboring apartments open to the exterior.
Specially constructed airtight ply boxes were installed to receive the new windows, and also allow for preliminary airtightness
testing to more accurately reveal
air leakages elsewhere in the house
All new homes built in the state had to show through performance
testing that they had an
air leakage rate of less than 7
air changes per hour at 50 Pascals of...
All of the homes
tested approximately 25 % below the maximum
air leakage threshold set out in the Building America program.
The continuous
air barrier yields minimal
leakage, with
air tightness
testing revealing only 0.3 ACH50 which is half the Passive House requirement.
New, mandatory «blower door
testing» as a step to measure
air leakage and ensure buildings keep heated or cooled
air inside
1 Wolf Easi - Joists in the roof for organised installation of services; 2 Windows bracketed externally onto blocks to reduce cold bridging; 3 The walls are externally insulated with 200 mm Xtratherm platinum EPS 100 insulation; 4 EPS brought up into eaves to meet roof insulation; 5 Airtight parge coat to walls, with Intello membrane to ceiling and battening for the Gypframe ceiling to contain services inside the airtight layer; 6 Cooper Insulation's Wincon unit, which enabled the Linham team to
test for obvious
air leakage points as they worked.
You can also
test the total supply duct
leakage by isolating the supply side with a cardboard dam on the return opening of the
air handler.
It's also obvious to me at this point that the best thing about these blower door
tests is not that we're reducing
air leakage in new homes (4 ACH50 is the broad side of barn) it's the conversations being started because of them.
Benchmark 1: 0.6 ach The Passivhaus standard requires that a building be airtight enough to reduce
air leakage to below 0.6
air changes per hour at 50 Pascals when subjected to a blower door
test.
The ductwork system and
air handler should be
tested for
leakage (less than 5 percent
leakage at 25 Pa).
