Noting that the timing of KD outbreaks in Japan coincides with certain wind patterns from Asia, climate scientist Xavier Rodó, PhD, and colleagues at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies and the Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences, both in Barcelona, used computer models to simulate air currents and
airborne particle transport for all days since 1977 with high
numbers of KD cases in Japan, based on data compiled by Yoshikazu Nakamura, MD, and colleagues at Jichi Medical University in Japan.
In one sentence: Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory found that when miniscule
particles of
airborne dust, thought to be a perfect landing site for water vapor, are modified by pollution, they change cloud properties via ice crystal
number concentration and ice water content.
A team of scientists led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory atmospheric researcher Dr. Susannah Burrows and collaborator Daniel McCoy, who studies clouds and climate at the University of Washington, reveal how tiny natural
particles given off by marine organisms —
airborne droplets and solid
particles called aerosols — nearly double cloud droplet
numbers in the summer, which boosts the amount of sunlight reflected back to space.
Kok's work, which focused on a type of
airborne particle called mineral dust, also suggests that there may be several times more dust
particles pumped into the atmosphere than previously believed, since shattered dust appears to produce an unexpectedly high
number of large fragments.
In addition, the interaction of clouds and
airborne particles was seen to have climate - altering consequences; the life span of clouds increased, and clouds withheld precipitation for a longer time when the
number of
particles increased in the air.
