Personally, I don't subscribe to a valuation system, but generally
airline rewards currencies are valued at 1.4 — 1.8 cents each.
I'm not loving the fact that the main
airline rewards currency I'll be collecting is Avios but, as I've explained in a separate post, the minimum spend criteria that American Airlines now imposes on elite qualification makes reaching BA Gold considerably cheaper — so I'm just going to have to learn to live with Avios and make sure I collect more useful currencies through credit card spend.

Rewards card make more sense at that point, or even a 2 % cashback card?

So, if you don't have quite enough Membership

The way I try to protect myself from
airline devaluations is by concentrating my credit card earnings on transferable

IAG's two biggest

Rewards, Amex Membership

Usually the best value you can get from these points is to, as is usually the case with all transferable
reward currencies, transfer them into
airline programs for award flights.
Miles in your frequent flyer accounts, in most cases, will always have the potential to be of the most value of all
rewards currencies and
airline credit cards are one of the best ways to get those miles.
After you get the sign - up bonus, this card is best for earning Alaska
Airlines rewards and supplementing your everyday cards that have more versatile points
currencies.
Like Vueling, Avios is part of the International
Airlines Group and operates the
rewards currency of multiple
airline loyalty programmes, including British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, AerClub, Meridiana Club, Flybe, Kulula and now Vueling Club.
One common strategy is to have one go - to card that offers
rewards in a
currency you like, such as a particular
airline's miles, cash back or bank -
reward points.
Virgin Australia claims that «[t] he conversion rate reflects the fact that each
airline program operates in a different
reward program
currency.»
They are generally considered one of more valuable
reward currencies and these points can be transferred to several different
airline and hotel partners.
Customers should be enrolled in both Southwest
Airlines Rapid
Rewards and AirTran Airways A +
Rewards programs in order to earn
currency from whichever
airline they purchase a ticket.
This is easily the highest number of
airline partners of any transferable
currency and compares favorably to other transferable points programs, such as Chase Ultimate
Rewards and Amex Membership
Rewards.

And finally, sometimes bank account bonuses can even offer
airline miles or other
reward currencies as bonuses, although cash is by far the most common bonus I've seen.
While they don't have a
reward currency that can be transferred to partners like Chase, Amex, and Citi, they do have a solid offering with their Flexperks program, as well as some decent co-branded cards like those with Korean
Airlines.
Since British Airways is a member of the oneworld travel alliance, cardholders are entitled to redeem their «Avios,» the global
rewards currency used by this card, with more than a dozen participating
airlines worldwide.
If I took advantage of the transfer bonus to British Air and transferred all of my
rewards points, I could have 811,741 free
airline miles or «Avios», which are the «miles»
currency used with British Air.
Only Chase Ultimate
Rewards points are directly redeemable for cash, while all three points
currencies can be redeemed for paid, mileage - earning
airline tickets.
I've always had a credit card that came with some sort of
reward feature, and in the past few years, my cards have shifted toward
airline miles or
currencies that can transfer to
airline miles.
