Instead of hopping on your connecting flight at a connecting point, you can stay at a stopover point as long as you want — depending on how

My favorite

In April 2014, American
Airlines miles had a major devaluation with some great
stopover rules being taken out.
American
Airlines» AAdvantage has an amazing
stopover rule within North America.
And
stopover rules are dictated by the currency you're using, not the
airline you're using that currency to fly.
But that's the beauty of using United
Airlines miles and taking advantage of their
stopover and open - jaw flexible
rules.
United
Airlines also has extremely generous
stopover and open - jaw
rules for many possibilities to maximize miles.
This was possible due to the lenient
stopover rules that Alaska
Airlines has in place.
