Stronger alcohol policies, including taxes and sales restrictions, have been shown to reduce the likelihood
of alcohol involvement among homicide victims, according to a new study from Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University.
Objective: While parental supervision has been demonstrated to predict
adolescent alcohol involvement, there has been little focus on the influence of adolescent characteristics, such as personality and alcohol use, on the effectiveness of parental supervisory practices.
Specifically, a 1 percent increase in the restrictiveness of policies corresponded to a 1 percent reduction in likelihood of
alcohol involvement among homicide victims.
Additionally, 50 % of all fatal motorcycle crashes occur on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and these crashes have a slightly higher rate of
alcohol involvement compared to all drivers in fatal crashes.
While the association between alcohol and homicide may seem obvious, there has been no recent study of
alcohol involvement in homicide victimization in U.S. states.

The new study looked at the relationship between alcohol policies in place and the likelihood
of alcohol involvement (either up to the legal limit of 0.08 or above that limit) among the 27,000 victims of homicide from 17 U.S. states between 2003 and 2012.
The results showed that
alcohol involvement was more prevalent in men (43.6 %) than in women (26.1 %), but trends were stable for both sexes.
