Molecules with
the aldehyde group are particularly interesting since several biologically significant molecules, including a family of sugar molecules, are aldehydes.
Instead of a hydrophilic alcohol group (an oxygen - hydrogen molecule bound to a hydrogen - saturated carbon atom), the final lignin polymer contained a hydrophobic
aldehyde group (a carbon atom double - bonded to an oxygen atom).

To get around that problem, a
group at the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory in Iowa, led by Vitalij Pecharsky — a materials scientist with a joint appointment at Iowa State University, Ames — started with powdery organic compounds, such as phosphonium salts, solid
aldehydes or ketones, and anhydrous potassium carbonate.
Back in the laboratory, the
group isolated three compounds called
aldehydes produced by the diatoms.
An earlier study by another
group had found that P450LA1 also made 19 %
aldehyde side - product by opening the epoxide.
