And by the same token, if we ignore and abuse our conscience (
alethiometer) then it won't work properly any more, and may lead us into darkness and loneliness that could even last for ever.
But like
the alethiometer, we have to learn to use it, and we have to be honest in listening and obeying it.
Actually his idea of the «
alethiometer» (which literally means «truth machine» in Greek) is an interesting one.
Rating: Hoopla Factor: Every time the characters refer to
the alethiometer, they quickly follow it up with «golden compass» (though tellingly off - camera), and this goes to show just how «careful» people are when 180 million dollars are on the line.
All the techniques that felt so intuitive and effortless to me when I was writing my first book now seemed impossible (I always compare this to Lyra of The Golden Compass and
her alethiometer).
Renowned storyteller Philip Pullman returns to the parallel world of Lyra Belacqua and His Dark Materials for a thrilling and epic adventure in which daemons,
alethiometers, and the Magisterium all play parts.
The Golden Compass is obsessed with getting you to seek answers to questions and understanding the meaning of the symbols on
the alethiometer.
Once you've set your symbols you basically have to keep a reticule over the centre of
the alethiometer until you're told to press a specific button.
Lyra's gameplay is mainly focussed on platforming, deceiving non playable characters through mini games and using a device called
the alethiometer.
Considering how much time you spend with
the alethiometer, you'd have hoped it was a little bit more interesting to use, but sadly, it's not.
It's a shame then that you'll spend most of the game mucking around with
the alethiometer and in menus full of mini games as you attempt to deceive NPCs.
