For
portfolio allocations pursuing strategies similar to STRIDE, our calculation
of hypothetical
retirement income therefore provides a sound basis for estimating how much can be withdrawn from that
portfolio in a conservative, sustainable way.
During times that stress
retirement portfolios, you are at least as well off by starting with a large bond (i.e., TIPS and / or Ibonds)
allocation (around 80 %) and gradually buying stocks (about 2 % to 4 %
of your initial
portfolio amount plus inflation annually) as bonds mature.
So the opposite
of that is, now, on the bond side, as you grow more conservative and closer to
retirement, the total
portfolio allocation of your international bonds grows, relative to what it was when you had less bonds.
Instead
of a traditional glide path that decreases the equity portion
of the

retirement stocks - bonds
allocations — 60 % -40 %, 50 % -50 % and 40 % -60 % — held up about as well or better than a 90 % stocks - 10 % bond
portfolio, and a larger bond stake would have provided more
of a cushion during stock market setbacks.

In terms
of how this relates to asset
allocation in
retirement, if you are comfortable with any given 5 year period being slightly below breakeven on a worst case basis, you could consider having about 5 years» worth

of your
portfolio in stocks will at least hold their value pretty well.

Employing such investment types can go hand in hand with a more simplified in -
retirement portfolio strategy: Because broad - market index funds provide undiluted exposure to a given asset class (a U.S. equity index fund won't be holding cash or bonds, for example), a retiree can readily keep track
of the

allocation in your
portfolio remains in sync with your level
of risk aversion and overall investment objectives 3) Keep costs and taxes to a minimum by avoiding most high turnover actively managed mutual funds and opting for tax - deferred savings whenever possible (not only do their investments grow tax - sheltered but for most people their MTR at
