It would take a
marathon session — think back to the 1980s with Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev
in Reykjavik — to resolve even one key issue, let
alone the plenitude of areas of concerns.
And when it comes to
marathons, the opening miles are about position, about energy conservation, about not taking the wrong turn and ending up 26 miles
in the other direction, friendless and
alone.
In a matter of a few months I had transitioned from well paid international PR manager at a high tech firm,
marathon runner and singer for a 10 - piece R&B band with charming boyfriend to unemployed (tech crash lay - offs), single (fully dumped), living
alone (housemate moved to Denver) and soon - to - be band-less.
The fact that exercise
alone doesn't result
in significant weight loss was demonstrated
in the notorious
marathon study, wherein previously sedentary participants trained for a
marathon for 18 months and eventually ran a
marathon - we know they exercised a lot because a
marathon is no small feat (Janssen et al., 1989)!
Instead of placing the vast narrative of Deathly Hallows into a snug three - hour shell, the two pictures provide roughly five hours of screen time to page through the quest, patiently absorbing the resplendent and harrowing details of the book, slowing down the entire effort
in a
marathon manner that might leave those weaned on the movies
alone slightly disorientated.
If one runs a
marathon without expectation of winning, but rather participation
alone is an end
in itself, the struggles that writing entails, by analogy, become not only tolerable but enhance the process with minimum resentment, anger, and frustration.
