Emily Nathan, writing for artnet this week notes: «Along with other younger artists, Ekblad is putting her own stamp on a kind of evocative abstraction that had seemed exhausted by earlier masters, from Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miró to Jackson Pollock and Asger Jorn, and her works offer a refreshing return to the simple, physical pleasure of sculpture and painting.

Along with Pietro Consagra, Achille Perilli, and Giulio Turcato, in 1947 he helped formulating a manifesto and establish a group of abstract artists called Forma I. Although imbued with socialist leanings, the group did not follow the realist social commentary furthered by Guttuso but proposed to reclaim abstraction from the Futurism movement.

The show pushes our conceptions of the boundaries of Indian abstraction by including works like 17th century Islamic tiles from the CSMVS permanent collection along with the selection of modern abstract works from the Foundation's collection.The layered interpretation of Indian abstraction as well as the inclusion older works, usually unmentioned in this modern context, make this a show a must see.

Viewing these pieces side by side, the mysterious along with the cheerful, the cartoon beside the photograph, only lends weight to the idea that figurative painting can contain its own strange dimensions and abstractions.
